Class 9 Yr 5/6 Miss Mattar 2020 - 2021

Miss Mattar

Year 5/6 teacher

Croeso i ddosbarth 9,

Welcome to the class page for Class 9 with Miss Mattar and Mrs Webster. We cannot wait to welcome you back for the new school year.

In terms of changes made to the school day, including starting and finishing times, please look at the Parent Handbook sent out by Mrs Williams.

Our topic this half term is "Heroes" and we will be placing a lot of emphasis on heroes in our local, national and international communities and not just those that appear in Marvel films. I cannot wait to find out all of your ideas for our new topic and to take those further into our learning.

Below is a brief overview of what we will be looking at in school up until October half term.

Wellbeing - your wellbeing is important,  looking at ways to feel good about ourselves and ways to prepare us for learning together in school again will be a priority.

SpAG- Spelling and grammar from Curriculum Visions.

English writing -Newspaper writing and biographical writing linked to a hero. We are also going to be developing skills for writing through regular handwriting practice.

English reading - this half term we will be looking at the fictional text "The Selfish Giant" written by Victorian author, Oscar Wilde. Whilst we will be reading this text in school, please try and read your school reading book for at least 15 minutes every single night.  If you would like to read for longer, then that would be absolutely fantastic. Reading is another way to gain new words into your vocabulary that will help you to construct the different writing pieces that we will complete this year. The Oxford Owl website is still readily available for you to use, especially if you finish a reading book at home and do not have any other appropriate reading material at home.

Maths - White Rose Maths Place Value and Four Rules of Number. This will involve lots of recapping of number skills, as these are so important for all of the other areas of Mathematics.

Science - Experiment surrounding materials and face masks.

PE - Hockey skills

Welsh - Manylion Personol (personal profile)

Humanities - Heroes with a focus on map work.

Health and Well-being - Heroes for our health.

This year, we are offering blended learning/flipped learning opportunities at Westwood, this involves a mix of learning in school and at home. This half term, your blended learning activities will surround research on a hero. You will find out more about this in class.

Things to remember:

PE- Our PE day for Class 9, is on a Tuesday. This means that you can come into school in your PE kit so that you are ready for our lesson straight away.

Outdoor learning - Every Wednesday we will be going outside and completing different activities. This means that you will need to come in school in clothes appropriate for being outdoors, and a coat.

Homework - Our homework will go out on a Monday and will need to be brought back into school on a Friday. In Year 5 and 6, you will be expected to read a little each night at home - and if you spend 10-15 minutes each day completing a short personalised online task from our range of platforms that would be fantastic; it will enable you to revise prior learning, make connections and consolidate learning that has happened in school.

The use of Studyladder, Seesaw and MyMaths will still continue this year, so passwords will need to be kept safe when given.

This year is going to be full of change, but plenty of opportunities to develop new skills and learn about many new things. I am sure that Mrs Webster and I will learn many things from you too.

Here is something for you to think about,

"do all heroes wear capes?"

Diolch pawb,

Miss Mattar and Mrs Webster.

What's Being Said?

"I never thought that Westwood was so large inside! From the road, it seems so small. What a wonderful use of space. The school has changed so much over the years!" - recent visitor to school
