Commemoration day

On Friday 21st September, Westwood very proudly held the reception for the Buckley commemoration day for our local World War 1 hero, Fred Birks V.C. M.M.

Many months in the planning, with a laying of a commemorative stone in the      gardens near Fred’s family home in Lane End with pupil representation from Westwood and Elfed, and later a service at St Matthew’s church, Team  Westwood rolled out the red carpet, pulled out all the stops  and welcomed  dignitaries to celebrate this very special occasion. Guests invited to Westwood included Lord and Lady Barry Jones, the Chairman of Flintshire County Council, Lord Lieutenant Mr Henry George Fetherstonhaugh , representation from the Australian high commission, Airbus colleagues, Buckley’s councillors and the    Buckley society, Chair & Vice Chair of Governors from Southdown, Drury and Westwood and of course, Fred’s family!

The children of year 5 & 6 presented their story of Fred’s life—superb singing and acting by all of our performers. Janet Tildesley re-presented the Fred Birks award to our previous winning pupils, Chloe and Harry. It was an emotional yet uplifting experience for all!  The hospitality and welcome by our pupils and staff has been commented on by numerous members of the audience that day and in many letters of thanks and gratitude, which are included here on the website news page. We are extremely proud of our staff and children; they are always amazing and this day, they took it to the next level – it was so special! So well done Team Westwood – you did us proud!
