Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,
A warm welcome to you all, thank you for visiting our class page for the academic year 2024 - 2025.
Enhancing and building on the range of vocabulary children have is important. Check out the tabs at the top of our class page for a range of activities that will aid the development of vocabulary, if practised regularly. Remember to access all the functions on our website the best experience is when you use an i-pad, Chromebook or PC. Some important components are accessed by phone but for the full experience other devices work more effectively.
Parents often ask "What can we do to help at home?" Encouraging the use of these short but snappy activities at the top of this page would be fantastic - it's a great start for enhancing children's reading, writing and oracy.
Words are set into three different categories - encouraging the development of tier 2 and 3 words helps to ensure children have full understanding of what they read.
Tier 1 – everyday, familiar words for those children who speak English as their primary language. These are often ‘caught’ rather than learned through direct instruction.
Tier 2 – high-frequency, impactful language encountered more often when reading than used when speaking. These words are useful in multiple contexts and help children express themselves clearly and with precision. These are the words that we aim to directly teach during English lessons (and beyond). These words tend to be used in written language and they are versatile/have a high utility (e.g. occurrence, tended, haunting, fortune).
Tier 3 – The words we use when talking and writing about specific subjects or a particular field of study. These words are either limited to specific domains (like science and maths vocabulary) or they are extremely rare words.
Topic areas
We will be studying topics that reflect the experiences, challenges and opportunities that face humanity and the world we live in.
SeeSaw
All children have a learning journal on SeeSaw. Children have a password and a link is shared with all parents, please do register (if you haven't done so already) to access Seesaw and travel parts of our learning journey as we go.
Outdoor Learning
Outdoor learning will take place to extend learning opportunities, on occasions children will be required to wear old clothes. Parents and guardians will be notified in advance when children are required to come in clothing other than school uniform. Children should always bring a warm coat to school and a pair of old trainers so we are able to access the outdoors at any given time. In Year 6, we continue our work as mini police supported by the community PCSO, we have strong links with local care homes, Buckley library and Lane End Nature Reserve; we enjoy continuing to build links aross our local community. In the summer term we are looking forward to being involved with Crown Green Bowls at Hawkesbury, once the season begins. We are lucky to have excellent support from our local councillors Carolyn Preece and Dan Rose who actively engage with pupils and staff and help to enhance the experiences we offer the children in the community.
Important days
Homework will be set on a Friday for completion and submission before the following Wednesday, please. Homework is set in a variety of ways, there is always work for children to access from home on Read Theory and Study Ladder, in addition tasks are set on Seesaw and on occassions children will be sent home with a homework book for completion of a written task.
Reading - Each day at home please (In Year 5/6 children are encouraged to read at least 4 times a week)
PE day - Thursdays (However, please note that each term Y6 will have some opportunities to have their weekly session on a Monday with Mr Kelly - professional sports coach - dates will be shared via Seesaw).
Learning platforms
Learning platforms remain an important part of revisiting and reinforcing learning for pupils. Log on codes are issued to all children for Read Theory, Study Ladder, RM Easimaths and SeeSaw.
At home, for regular times tables practice, and practice using the four rules of number (+ - x and ÷) children can access SAFMEDS without a login at https://safmeds.gwegogledd.cymru/.
Please encourage your child to access and complete activities at home on a regular basis, to encourage independent learning.
Hwyl Fawr - Stay safe and see you soon.
